Aspire to Something, Win a Prize

Win this!

I picked up a handful of digital cameras in the SkyMall promotion a couple of weeks ago, which I intended to resell at a modest loss. However, ever since two Canon PowerShot D10 Digital Cameras arrived, I haven’t been able to bring myself to advertise them. The more I read about them, the cooler I think they are. At the same time, my Delta SkyMiles account is about to be nicely topped off. With a shiny new camera and a stash of miles, my imagination is running as wild as an antelope through a mountain bike course. (Visual Aid: about 7 seconds into this video, office productivity meets my imagination.)

I haven’t had a chance to put this camera through its paces and I can’t provide a review, but the marketing has me sold: Waterproof! Freezeproof! Shockproof! Yes, please. I keep imagining how great it would be to actually own this thing and take it on a few trips I’ve been dreaming of. I can’t help but imagine that many of my readers might feel the same way about this nifty little device. So, I’ve decided to keep one for myself and give the other away to one lucky reader.

Blogging has been a ton of fun for me and much of it has to do with the readers. Taking the time to write and manage the blog can be wearisome, but hearing stories of other people’s successes and travel adventures makes it all worth it. I’ve learned as much as anyone by writing this blog and the best part has been helping people turn realize that the possibilities are greater than they ever imagined.  So, this contest will encourage people to share their travel aspirations and let loose with their imagination a bit.

The contest begins now and will end at 11:59pm (Central) on December 31, 2011. If you want to be considered for the drawing, here’s what you need to do:

  • Post a comment at the end of this blog entry with a brief description of a great destination where this camera would really come in handy. It can be an ordinary destination or somewhere remote, exotic, and only achievable through diligent mile collecting efforts.

Terms and conditions are as follows:

  • The winner will be chosen through a random drawing on Jan 1st, 2012.
  • Participants must enter an email address with their response in order to confirm the identity of the winner. Email addresses will not be sold, published, traded, or shared.
  • Participants may enter more than once, but only one entry per email address will be accepted.
  • The Man of a Thousand Places will have sole discretion in interpreting the rules of the game and determining the winner.

Get the adventurous neurons in your brain firing and let us know where you’ve always wanted to go! Creative answers won’t improve your odds of winning, but everyone else is sure to appreciate reading them!

Thanks to everyone and good luck!

This camera sure would have come in handy when we visited the Ice Bar onboard the Norwegian Epic. Our camera did freeze up. If we ever decide to make the trek to the famous Ice Hotel a camera like this would be invaluable.

  2. Mike says:

I love the snow and ine place I’m planning on going to is Alaska. I will be traveling with a dog sled and sleeping outside for few days.

  5. Ralph Liberatoscioli says:

I think this would be handy for a honeymoon trip to Tahiti!

Shockproof you say? Well, it would work wonders for my trip to Pamplona, Spain next year for Fiesta de San Fermin! (Running of the Bulls)

  7. Michael says:

We are going to visit several castles in Europe this coming May and the camera would be great for some shots from the top of a turret. Thanks! Happy travels to all!

  8. Lee says:

Not so exotic, but an easy to use camera when my kids and I go to the local play park.

  9. Pierre says:

Well, this could be useful for a one-week expedition in Svalbard in October 2012, photographying the nothern lights from one of the world’s most remote and coldest places!

  10. Matt says:

The camera would do a great job of capturing my girlfriend’s expression when I surprise her with a trip in a few weeks to a secluded beach resort to propose. Only possible thanks to miles and points! Happy travels!

  11. Lisha says:

Taking pictures while snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef

  12. PV says:

I would use it in Phuket on our upcoming trip in Jan 2012. Would be awesome. I could share some pics here!

  13. susan says:

Offshore Place of Refuge, Big Island; if the dophins don’t want to say cheese, I’ll photograph the fish or the corals!

  14. Jordan says:

This camera would be very useful in my upcoming trip to the Dominican Republic for sightseeing and taking underwater pictures.

  15. David Gutierrez says:

Would use it to take pictures in Mumbai India on our trip to go back next year to India. Last time we went, I only had a camera phone and the pictures turned out horrible.

  16. Erin says:

After reading the description of how versatile the camera is, I couldn’t help but think the perfect test would be at a Kansas City Chiefs game in Arrowhead stadium, outside in December with the possibility of snow, ha!

  17. Harold says:

Anywhere I travel… I have a habit of dropping things.

  18. Stacey says:

This camera will come in very handy on our trip to the Bahamas in June. We will be going for a friends wedding and most likely that will be my son’s first time (he is 5 months now) on a beach and in the water. I am sure the pictures we will be able to take will be outstanding with this camera!

  19. Kat says:

It would be nice to have that for my upcoming TESOL training either at Phuket Thailand, Ho CHi Minh City Vietnam or Surabaya Indonesia. All of which has got something to do with nature. It would be the perfect gadget to record my will-be-teaching-and-learning-experiences there, in addition to the priceless memories it will capture. After this training I would have to go to Malaysia and have my 2nd meeting with my sweetheart there, in which i believe the camera will be reallllly handy. We are in a long distance relationship, so every snapshot and video will really be priceless. I hope I can acquire this camera soon :) Thanks a lot Ben. Hope your future travels will be as fun as always :)

  20. Don Harris says:

My wife is just taking up scuba, so lots of shallow water dives will be in her near future….I can’t think of a better way to get her into the sport (trust me I’ve been trying for years), than being able to take some pics while in shallow water.
Besides her generally klutzy nature leads me to believe this type of camera is exactly what she needs.
Anyways even if this entry isn’t chosen, best of luck to all others who have entered.
    Cheers!

  21. Branson Butler says:

I would use it for my upcoming family trip to San Diego/ Sea World that I booked completely with the bonus from my Chase Saphire card!

  22. JosephMay says:

This would be great on my diving trip to the Virgin Islands. I am also in the early planning stages of a trip to Capetown, Mauritius and the Seychelles. Could you Imagine the images I would be capturing there with this awesome camera!

    Thanks
    -JM

  23. Jon says:

…but is it ant-proof? I had ants build a nest inside my camera in Ivory Coast–completely destroyed the thing. I’ll need something to keep the little buggers out before making a trip like that again!

  24. Jon says:

Oh, and this would be great for our Disney World trip in Feb. Never know what’s going to happen when you’re holding your camera at arms length on the teacups!

Shhhh! The girls don’t know we’re taking them yet so keep it a secret.

  25. CU says:

This camera would capture beautiful pictures of this summer’s long-awaited trip to Aruba — my husband has never been to the islands, so the pictures will show his VERY BIG SMILE.

  26. Suzanne Barker says:

Sounds like a great camera and it would be great on my trip to Paris may 15th – might help with my butterfingers and general clumsiness so I actually end up with a working camera.

  27. Rolo says:

    Bangkok and Chiang Mai!

  28. Jenn says:

Shock-proof?! I’d love to take it along for “the Goofy” at Disney World in January. And then to Huntington Beach for another marathon in February. I’m sure there are more great races to take it on in March, April, May…

  29. David says:

Freezeproof and shockproof? I’ll gladly take it snowboarding to test those claims. I’ve had problems with other cameras not making it off the mountain.

  30. Ozaer N. says:

camera is useful when skinny dipping in the tropics muahahha!

  31. Craig Ford says:

  34. K says:

This camera would be ideal for the incredible undersea life of the Raja Empat in Indonesia. We spent some time there in an idyllic hut over the water. Huge fish and lots of them, turtles, sea snakes, and everything in rainbow colors. Get there if you can, with or without camera!

  35. Jenn says:

That camera looks great…I’ve used the disposable waterproof ones in the past, but their quality is sorely lacking. I would take this one with me up in the mountains when I go skiing this winter. Oh yes. (and on every tropical vacation for the rest of my life.)

  36. CarolynD says:

Headed to NorthWest. one can never have too many camera’s.

    Carolyn

  37. Elizabeth says:

I have an excursion planned to Ice, a fantastic local display that is set at a rather frigid 9 degrees. You are told to keep your camera under your coat, take it out for a quick picture, then promptly return it to its warmer home so as not to freeze and ruin your camera. I think this would be a nice test of the freeze proof capabilities. Since I don’t actually get to travel, and am terrible at remembering to take out my camera, having something I didn’t have to worry about freezing and ruining might actually get me to take a photographic record! I know y’all want to see giant Shrek ice sculptures on my blog, right? :)

  38. Aaron S says:

My wife and I have been mile/point collecting this year for a trip after she completes her grad school in April 2013 – we’re planning on a 6 week round-the-world trip to Madrid, Rome, Amman, Delhi, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Beijing, Tokyo, Sydney, Auckland, Santiago, Lima, and LA. So I’ll have to go with my Europe cruise next year…I can just see my sister trapping her shoe in some cobblestone in Rome and dropping her camera. Shockproof would work wonders!
